Initiating a movement far different
from the existing trend, Terai Human Rights Defenders Alliance (THRD Alliance)
in collaboration with the similar institutions and other helping hands, have
been working extensively on who to deal with the Human Rights cases from last
few years.
THRD
Alliance launched a two year project in 1st July 2013. Project was
all about Monitoring, Documentation and Litigation of Human Rights Violation in
the Terai. The project got started with the objective of capacity building of the
youths, human rights defenders, media persons, lawyers and the officers of
Nepal Police on Human rights. Project sought to make people aware on the
principles of human rights, constitutional and legal provisions, duties and
responsibilities. Those activities also focused on media advocacy as different
media outlets play vital role in the protection and promotion of human rights.
THRD Alliance's activities also focused on the promotion of culture of dialogue
to resolve the issue, and preparing a group of committed youth human rights
defenders in the Terai. THRD Allinace has been developing and fostering such groups.
Project is
working on Monitoring and Documentation, to establish a system of regular
monitoring, documentation and dissemination of human rights violation cases by local
human rights defenders. Dialogues and Capacity Building is focused for raising
public awareness through dialogues and to enhance capacity of youth human
rights defenders. The projects focus Litigation and
Advocacy to enable the victims to have their say in the protection of human
rights protection and delivery of justice.
As the
outcome of last year work done, regular monitoring and documentation of human
rights violations have been conducted in coordination with human rights defenders,
capacity of youth human rights defenders and awareness of community people has
increased through dialogues and training and litigation and advocacy for human
rights protection has strengthened. Terai Human Rights bulletin is also being
published electronically and distributed among the stakeholders, policy makers,
community people and the human rights defenders to show the current and
emerging pattern of human rights violations in the Terai. The project will end
in June 2015.
There are
several desired, who are highly motivated to work on the Human Rights issue,
but most of them lack the technical knowledge. Human Rights Defenders lacks the
basic skills to work on the field. Journalists also lack the knowledge of
dealing with the words. Litigators are a bit unaware of the legal procedures.
Police personnel’s also have very complexities with the legal and procedural
steps. THRD Alliance has a distinct objective of rectifying all the flaws
relating with Human Rights issue.
Project
officials say, the response received from the field is motivating and in fact
has inspired them to move ahead with rigidity on the mission.
